RANJANA KHAN

Lapis and Crystal Chandelier Earrings
Made of white and red sandstone with interior decorations of fresco paintings and mosaics, India’s Amer Fort is considered one of the country’s most imposing hilltop forts.  India is also the birthplace of Ranjana Khan.

As the wife of famed fashion designer Naeem Khan, and having worked closely with fashion titans like Jean-Paul Gaultier and Stella McCartney through her company Phoenix Hand Embroidery prove that Khan was destined to continue carving out special niches in the fashion industry.

At 55, the former model can still rock a backless halter and mini-dress with the best of them.  The traditional East Indian handicraft of embroidery however would arguably bring her even more attention in the world of fashion than her days in editorial layouts.

After over a decade working as an embroidery specialist, Khan decided she needed a change of pace.  So she chose to leave behind an illustrious career that required 10 international trips a year.  “I was burnt out so I stopped.  Still I find it a real challenge to not be doing something,” she says.

In becoming a jewelry maker Khan took liberally from her knowledge of embroidery; creating high-fashion, statement making choker necklaces, cocktail rings, drop earrings and cuff bracelets.  Combinations of silk, crystals, lapis lazuli, rose quartz, glass beads, resins and rhinestones are implemented in her eye catching, affordable fashion jewelry.

Khan packs on these elements developing complementary textures of alternately vibrant or muted colors.  Some necklaces possess an Art Deco vibe, while the style of others is a bit more Victorian.  Overall her aesthetic is dramatic and theatrical made for the stylish, well-groomed woman who likes getting noticed.

“I subvert the idea of what jewelry can and cannot be.  I treat precious things in an almost cavalier way—using acid and flame to achieve a desired look.  There are no rules or preconceptions to my work,” says the New York-based designer.

“I launched my collection in September 2008—the month of the financial crash. I believe the collection took off because my items are pocketbook friendly.

I view every collection as a departure from the previous one. Each season I embark on a creative journey that ultimately yields inventive and eclectic pieces.”
