Volda, Norway is an inviting locale with historic landmarks.

The Volda Church, for instance, holds renowned Norwegian art; and the scenic natural wonders of Dalsfjorden, a picturesque county, offers a lucid view of crystal clear sea water.

Norway is also home to featured jewelry designer Bjorg Nordli-Mathisen.

Whether from the mind of Danish jeweler Kim Buck or Swedish jewelry brand David & Martin, Scandinavian jewelry design is almost always characterized by classic outlines with elements of surprise.

Intertwined coils of 18-karat gold and sterling silver that mimic a bird’s nest; anatomically correct, veined heart necklaces; and ear cuffs that mimic horse hair crests of medieval knights are a few of the nuanced details Nordli-Mathisen implements in her eight-year-old brand Bjorg Jewellery.

For her designs the arts bred jeweler enjoys the magical dance between classicism and whimsy as they glide across realism and dreamscapes.

Her two-finger Three Raven Ring highlights the pensive looking craniums of rutinium plated sterling silver ravens.

The fluid drip Dew of Dreams design, featured in anklet and upper arm cuffs, is reminiscent of spilled paint.  Her 18-karat rose gold plated bronze After Eden cuff bracelets are a show stopping visual of edgy details in the form of a delicate rib cage.

“There is a conceptual approach I take with all of my designs that encapsulates both previous and present collections.  It is a balancing act between the fine and the raw.

Sources of inspiration can come from surrealism, Charles Darwin experiments or ancient myths.  Within any given source of inspiration or collection I want to convey nature through an industrial style.  Everything is handmade.  As an artist, I have lived in different parts of the world.  I was living in India at the time I began making jewelry.

Traveling and drifting towards new corners of the world is very much a part of my creative process.  My nomadic lifestyle informs every piece of jewelry and constantly inspires me.”

2013 Jewelry Trend Alert:   Nordli-Mathisen’s clean yet idiosyncratic style enlists the blush shades of rose gold and the subtle gleam of sterling silver; both metals of which are on trend.
