Known locally as the House of Magic, the 200-year-old Indian Museum is a place of awe and surprise.

Located in Kolkata, India the structure houses over 60 galleries and over “a million artifacts.”

Items ranging from a 4,000-year-old mummy to an emerald goblet owned by Shah Jaran are among the fascinating sights to see here.  India is also home to featured jewelry designer Bhavesh.

I believe it takes a certain level of daring to bring a traditional, time-honored aesthetic into a modern context.  Bhavesh’s lush and conservative jewelry collections of sterling silver, 22-karat gold vermeil, and a plethora of semi-precious gemstones run the style gamut of the regal intricacy of his filigree Cupid’s Dart Necklace to the demure elegance of his Modern Minimalist Earrings

His blend of Western sensibilities and opulent East Indian aesthetics is a sublime marriage that won him acclaim during an exhibition in Paris, France ten years ago.

A descendant of jewelers, Bhavesh developed a love for the art of jewelry making and gemstones.  At the age of sixteen he opted to sell gemstones; a pursuit that turned out to be unfulfilling.

However, after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Bhavesh returned to his jewelry making roots; a career move he has not regretted.

“Jewelry crafting is our family tradition dating back to Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.  During that time my ancestors were jewelers in the kingdom of Jaipur,” he says.

“I grew up observing the colors and exquisiteness of jewelry so I was inclined to do something within the same field.  Designing was easy for me because I knew a great deal about gemstones and their settings.  It is in my blood.”

2014 Jewelry Trend Alert:  Subdued color makes a splash this year as a style trend.  Bhavesh’s play of light blue chalcedony, black onyx, and feldspar align him with the trend.
