Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia (or the Church of Holy Wisdom) is a structure of unparalleled beauty.

Though presently known as the Ayasofya Museum, the building is a stunning remnant of Turkish architecture.  Turkey is also home to featured jewelry designer Lika Behar.

Like contemporary Turkish jewelers Yossi Harari and Gurhan Orhan, Behar lovingly implements Byzantine opulence into her beautiful handmade jewelry collections.  Exquisite hues of precious metals and gemstone lure the eye and capture imagination.

Adjoining the butterscotch glow of 24-karat gold alongside dusky, oxidized sterling silver in stacking rings and bangle bracelets provide striking visual dimension.

Her inclusion of granules and remarkable gemstones like Persian turquoise, pink tourmaline and brown sapphire show her skill at metalsmithing and lapidary.  Her collections are a dazzling presentation of timeless elegance within Old World artisanship.

“I was born in Istanbul. It is known as one of the truly great romantic destinations and is the fundamental source of inspiration for my collections.

I wanted to reconcile the rich inspiration of ancient jewelry traditions with the sensibility of the modern world.

Each design is handcrafted.  The color selection of the gemstones I use is inspired by Istanbul’s land and seascapes.  I wanted to yield a tawny luxury fit for the modern woman.  The jewelry reflects the ancient history and the modern feminine spirit.”

A selection of items from Behar's lush collections is available for purchase online at OsterJewelers.com.
