PORNPINOM PATTAMASUKHON

You have to get an early start if you want to see the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Thailand. The best way to get there is on a long tail boat, and you are in for an array of merchandise that includes fresh fruits and vegetables, handicrafts and souvenirs. Thailand is also home to featured jewelry designer Pornpinom Pattamasukhon.

As a youth, Pattamasukhon--nicknamed `Golf’--grew up in a home where wood provided her lumberman father with a solid livelihood.

“My father eventually set up a small workshop that grew into a small wood factory. Growing up in this environment, I saw a lot of wood scraps left all over the place.

When I was young I would use the wood as toys. When I grew up I saw more beauty in these small pieces of wood using them to make ornaments and then combining the wood with silver.”

Pattamasukhon builds her unique cuff bracelets, pendant necklaces, and earrings with mango wood as well as coconut shells. The designer jewelry, while simplistic, is sleek and modern as the raw beauty of the materials take center stage.

The color of the mango wood alternates between a crisp black with a hint of gloss like a domino, and a rich brown with black and reddish-brown stripes. She also implements a lovely spotted coconut shell with its gorgeous natural leopard-like print.

Despite the materials’ earth tones, the jewelry is chic, elegant and sophisticated rather than rustic. Pattamasukhon works with the silversmiths employed at her husband’s silver shop to cultivate settings for mango wood and coconut shell designs that include starfish, leaves, seashells, lotus blossoms, and butterflies.

“I love to design from reclaimed wood showing its natural textures as much as I can. By doing this, I not only create jewelry I love, but I also get the chance to help the environment while adding beauty to the people who wear it.”
