SARA SILVIO HANDCRAFTED JEWELRY

Located south of Lake Ontario in Upstate New York is the wine region Finger Lakes AVA (American Viticultural Area).

Spreading out across 11,000 acres the collection of vineyards is the biggest wine-producing area in the state of New York.

New York is also home to featured jewelry designer Sara Silvio.

Silvio says that it is important for her to create when her mind is free of stress.  For her jewelry making is like “putting together a story,” and finding the right balance between the components.

Her classic yet unique pendant necklaces, leather bracelets, and drop earrings of 24-karat gold vermeil (which has a thin layer of nickel) and blackened silver hint at African and Native American tribal garb.

The juxtaposition of oxidized silver rings, faceted Czech glass beads, and wire wrap details highlight Silvio’s creative “spontaneity” that transforms into her signature style.

The mother of two loved the dance of creating jewelry during high school.  Even after majoring in women’s studies at the University at Buffalo at the State University of New York, jewelry remained a passion.

After selling her baubles, part-time, through outlets in California and New York she decided to make her true passion a full-time gig.  In 2004, she launched her brand Sara Silvio Jewelry with its exotic glamour.

“Modern femininity is complicated for sure.  Life is mundane, unpredictable, regimented, challenging and thrilling.  These are paradoxes that define womanhood.  When I wake up in the morning I want to feel, rooted, beautiful and special.

My intention is to create jewelry that radiates a woman’s strength and joy.  I create from well-traveled gems and metals striving for balance and tone.

I am fascinated by the entire idea of adornment—the ritualistic aspect of it.  It is a dialogue that crosses borders and a way to say we feel comfortable with ourselves.”
